Kansas City Culture Extends into the Art of the Selfie
The Selfie Boutique Opens at Park Place in Leawood as part of the
Growing “Made-for-Instagram” Museum Trend

“Made-for-Instagram” exhibits are a form of art that is growing in popularity nationwide and a Kansas City firm is leading this trend. Fueled by 80 million monthly active users on Instagram who post 1,000 selfies per second, there is plenty of interest in these immersive exhibits. This movement is being led by The Selfie Boutique, opening soon at Park Place in Leawood, Kansas, as an immersive art display that allows patrons to put themselves into the show.

Founder Alex Altomare and director Braydie Elliott have commissioned dozens of local artists to create all new experiences for the Park Place location. Altomare said the idea came to him during a visit to The Nelson-Atkins Museum, where he saw patrons taking selfies with paintings. This made him wonder what art would look like if the art were meant for taking selfies and photos, or “Instagrammable art” as he calls it. From there, Altomare commissioned a few local artists and set about designing and creating the first Selfie Boutique in December 2017.

Nothing is understated. Past exhibits have included an igloo of balloons, a room entirely covered in comic books, a wall of pink vintage TVs powered up with snow static screens, and an indoor beach with more than two tons of sand. Professional photography studio lights are installed, with special attention paid on optimizing conditions for everything from professional photography to aspiring young photographers, and even amateur photographers with cell phone cameras.

Altomare and Elliott selected Park Place after reviewing many sites and proposals from across Kansas City. With Park Place’s solid reputation for supporting small businesses, Altomare described the strong community vibe and merchant synergy, “AREA Real Estate Advisors believed in the value of our unique concept and KBS has a track record of supporting entrepreneurs with flexible, creative leases for start-ups. They’re stoking economic activity and cultural diversity by recruiting local makers, retailers, service providers and restaurants with competitive terms that further supports their beliefs.”

The Selfie Boutique will host a soft launch on Thursday, July 5th. Although the concept may initially appear to cater to bloggers and leading Instagram users, it is for all ages – social media accounts not required. It is a fun and safe place for children and teenagers to hang out, express their creativity, and shop for quirky selfie-inspired merchandise. The exhibit will open to the public on July 6th and include a dozen exhibits that will rotate regularly.
